I am Alba U., a Colombian American recovering sex, love and anorexia addict. Arriving in the United States in 1998, I began my journey by learning English and studying International Business. My commitment to education led me to serve for many years as an adjunct faculty member at my alma mater. In 2007, I founded a highly successful construction and roofing company, which I continue to operate today.
My sobriety over these 12 years has never been easy but it has been a positive life change for me. I started in Alanon in 2005, and after I finished my Twelve Steps, my Alanon sponsor suggested I go to S.L.A.A. I was very upset and disappointed by her suggestion. However, because I made the decision to work on my recovery, I started going to S.L.A.A. meetings and found out that love and anorexia are my core addictions. I was in a very dramatic, co-dependent marriage at that time and in one of my lowest points in my life. I was miserable and with no place to go so I continued going to meetings, working the Steps and recovery. After having two sponsees, I made the decision to be part of the ABC/M. Now, three ABC/Ms later, I am part of the Fellowship Board, which is an honor to me.
Through my own transformative journey in Twelve-Step recovery, I reconnected with my deepest core values. I decided to join the BOT with a profound desire to serve, inspire, and positively impact the lives of fellow travelers on the path of recovery. I step onto the Board eager to use my experiences to serve the Fellowship and inspire lasting change in others. I am deeply grateful for all the nice people who I have met in this Fellowship. Seeing their recovery is not only an inspiration but it pushes me to continue with my recovery.
